The Black Impala (Aepyceros melampus) is a medium-sized antelope found in southern Africa.
What do Black Impala look like:
The Black Impala is the same body size as a Common Impala, but has a striking pitch black coat, and males have a pair of 20-26 inch horns for trophy adults. They are a color variant of the Common African Impala.
Habitat of the Black Impala:
Black Impala can be found in savannas and light woodlands in South Africa. They are often found in grassy areas with lots of vegetation, and they hide behind tress from predators. While Impalas can survive in arid regions, they’re commonly found near rivers and watering holes.
Distribution of Black Impala:
Black Impala is a new color variant species of the Common Impala, thus, they are only found currently in South Africa. Black Impala are specifically a rare color morph of Impala.
Black Impala Behavior:
Black Impala are mainly active during cool days, and they rest and feed at night. They’re usually out just after sunrise, and right before sunset. They gather into herd of around 15-100 individuals, and are very territorial when food is plentiful. Female Impala have a gestation period of 6-7 months, and give birth to usually only one offspring at a time.
